One of the most mysterious parts of the golf swing to communicate and to habituate is the idea of rotation. We tend to understand rotation as going only around us. We also tend to think that our arms should lead in this rotation. If you are standing in the correct golf posture and you rotate your torso the arms as well as club will go up and around in your backswing and back down and around in the downswing (through the ball) and again up and around in the follow through. This rotation will transport your arms for you and you will not need to utilize them as much as you may think to move the golf club. Your arms can be passive and led through the swing. We are hoping that due to the fact you are holding the club properly the club will hinge and release in conjunction with this rotation providing you more consistency and clubhead speed to launch the golf ball higher and farther.
One of my favorite drills is to have you cross your arms across your chest and place your hands on the front of your shoulders. (It is your choice to hold a club there or not.) Take your golf posture by tilting from your hips keeping your shoulders tall i.e. no slouching. Rotate your left shoulder over top of your right shoe. When doing this your left shoulder will travel underneath your chin and your weight will transfer over to the inside of your right leg. Transfer the weight back to your left leg and unwind your right shoulder under your chin until it is over your left shoe. The key to this exercise is to maintain your initial posture. This ladies is rotation. I am happy to demonstrate next time you are in the golf shop. The season is young so stay positive that this is your year to have more fun and improve you game. See you soon.
